Hey guys, I have CA registered AW, as the title suggests it is a Romanian MAK-90. It has that goofy thumbhole stock on it, and I was wondering what the legality would be if I wanted to switch the stock for a conventional pistol grip set-up. I guess I would just have be in compliance with federal regs, (922r, I think?), and make sure I had 'X' number of US parts on it. Also, what about maybe a folding stock? I know that last one might be pushing it, but a guy can dream can't he?

Since it is registered, do to it as you wish, this includes folding stocks (as long as the gun folded is still 30 inches long).

The California 30" length limit specifie in 12276.1(a)(3) - which overrides the usual 26" min length for long guns - is only applicable to semiautomatic centerfire rifles.

Overall lengths for both the 26" and 30" limits in California are to be measured/considered with any stock folded.

CWS sells the Romanian side folding stocks to registered AW owners all the time at the gun shows. They fit great.

For yours, I'd recommend the Romanian stock (nice and solid metal), Tapco pistol grip (they've got a repro standard slim AK grip), and Tapco G2 trigger (single or double hook, not sure how your receiver is cut). You can pick up all that stuff on the CWS website.

If I recall correctly, you don't have a threaded barrel on that MAK-90, so that's one less part you'd have to mess with. You'd only need 4 parts. If you do have a threaded barrel, install a US-made slant brake OR flash hider. We've got these neat birdcage style flash hiders for the AK.

My friend had the same question about 6 months ago and wrote to the DOJ and got the ' if its registered, do what you want within the law' response. I may have a copy of the letter he got somewhere here.

Nice product, best price I could find. CHEAPER THAN WALMART! Stock fairly easy to install, forearm hand-guards not so much. Directions could be a little simpler and easier. Reminds me of instructions TRANSLATED from Chinese. Would recommend, and I will be back for more from OpticsPlanet, but I will not attempt another review until they fix this site. The hardest time leaving a simple review that I have ever had!

I was wondering something along the same line. I have a mac90 but have an ak pistol grip and stock (not installed but I had it on the gun with no issues). I've heard in one case it is illegal and once that it was ok. I'm assuming any ak stock would work on the mac but I'm unsure of the legality of it. Anyone have any insight?

Check your rifle as to the type of receiver before ordering ANY furniture. MAK's were imported with straight cut and angle cut receivers, stamped or milled. Knowing what youve got is very important before ordering furniture!

The MAK receiver (stamped) is 1.5mm thick, vs. 1mm for eastern bloc manufacture. Typically, Yugo, Bulgarian, Romanian etc. stocks and forends WILL NOT FIT A MAK-90 . The Chinese barrels are also larger in diameter, a consideration if you want to change the forends.

Go to ironwooddesigns. com for reasonably priced wood sets specifically for your version of the AK.

You need at least 6 US made parts to be compliant to legally convert from the butthole stock to a pistol grip. Some have purchased a US made FCG, with a single hook hammer. These parts are vastly inferior to the Chinese hammer and sear originally assembled in the rifles. Chinese hammers are a gold/bronse color and have the double hooks and are extremely durable. MAK 90's are known for having the best trigger pull on an AK pattern rifle.

Unless you are going to parade your rifle in front of a BATF agent, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Ethically, we should all be compliant to the existing "law" no matter how absurd it is.

There are still a few MAK's out there that were imported in the early 90's that are considered a "machine guns" by BATF. These Norinco receivers have the "third hole" for the auto sear drilled through the receiver just above the mag release. Even though they simply have a "pin" through this hole, they are completely illegal. A user may "drop in" the full auto FCG, remove the stop from the mag release mount to allow the selector to travel in the full down position, and badda bing!-a class three weapon.

Anyway, be very selective about what you order when converting the MAK's.

jack dennis: ironwood kicks ass but stay away from combloc customs. they show wood that has the most beautiful finishes well they use ironwood. only they freak it up the first thing you learn when you finish wood is to sand with the grain never against. they did not learn that you can see it all through the crap clear coat, there was vice marks all in my wood. man i was so pissed. i tell you this because i dont want people making the same mistake. hell the wood was finnished and they never fit my foregrip

fred garvin: I did the exact same thing. Mine took extensive filing and sanding to get it to fit. the butt stock that is. I too had to order the longer pistol grip screw. simply because of the slanted cut on the receiver and not the straight cut, you must buy these $175 ironwood sets. if the thing had a straight receiver you could do the same thing for $30. but oh well I'm happy with it after a ton of fiddling with it. now I have a true military AK, not some cheap knockoff, and it looks cool.

Leslie Horwinkle: Good God these cost more than the MAK did back in '92. Just break out the jig saw and sander, then throw on some shellac.

StayingFr0sty: Nice, I actually need to get a new sling myself, the one I have was sitting in the box so long the leather just fell apart when I touched it. Let me know how a new sling works out for you.

ReelGuyTv: You're right. No sabía eso. Mine has a stock installed and it had the swivel on the bottom. To me it feels uncomfortable that way. I checked out chinese military slings on the net and they are different from what the sling I've been using for my Polish AK put together by Vector Arms. Will be buying one soon.

StayingFr0sty: Russian AK's have the sling swivel on the side, Chinese ak's will typically have the sling swivel on the bottom as shown. They do have the option to get a AKM style set for the MAK90 but that was not what I wanted.

ReelGuyTv: The sling swivel should be on the side of the stock, not on the bottom. if you were to ever need to carry it on your back it will be somewhat awkward because the sling attachments on the front of Norincos are on the side. You would think for a 200 dollar stock set after shipping, they would have gotten this little thing right.

StayingFr0sty: Very happy with the stock set, I think it was well worth the wait. Everything was a pretty tight fit so a tiny bit of sanding was needed. My only complaint was the pistol grip was supposed to be made so it fit the original 3 1/4" screw that was used on the thumbhole stock, I found that the screw was too short so I ended up ordering the 4" screw which should be here any day.

New Ironwood stock set on my old MAK-90 Milled

Well I finally got off my duff and started with the stock conversion for the nice MAK-90 I bought a few years back. The MAK is one of the '93 models with the milled receiver and thumbhole stock, and built in the "386" plant along with the PolyTech Legend.

All along I'd wanted to convert the thumbhole stocdk back to the original "AK-47" Mira. The more I researched, the more I found that nobody had the stock set with pistol grip, handguards, etc for the milled version. I finally found Ironwood Designs and was able to order a custom stock set in Walnut. The bare natural stock was delivered over a year and a half ago. And there it sat until a couple of days ago.

I guess laying down the smokes made me want to fill the idol time with something, so I decided to get cracking. Here's what the stock looked like after some sanding and a wet wipe down to raise the grain.

Re: New Ironwood stock set on my old MAK-90 Milled

After the wood dried I went over it all with some 0000 steel wool to get the last wisps and clean the sanding dust off. The wood was so good to start with I wanted to use something to let the natural beauty show. I decided to go with an oil finish instead of stain. I opted for WATCO Danish Oil finish as recommended by Matt at Ironwood.

Here are the stock pieces after a few coats of the Danish "Natural" Oil. I opted for the "Fatboy" grip with checkered sides.

"Great stock for the price. It has a really durable feel (as any ak-47 worth its salt should have.) The price is ultra competitive and feels natural when a firing stance is assumed. I had to use a smaller (length) bolt to attatch the handle mount, but it was not an obstacle that caused and great concern or hardship. just go to lowes or any other hardware store. "I bought this product for my WASR-10. With slight modifications, the fit is really tight and feels good. The front handguard was in the way of the iron sights, so I had to file the lower catch on the guard to lower the overall height. Once I did this, it was loose, so I put in a little wedge on the bottom to snug it up tight. The grip is great and it looks great too! The Buttstock didn't go all the way in, so there is a slight gap, but it feels really tight also, no wiggle whatsoever. The gun feels amazing, and it looks really sweet too!"

"It is ok. I put it on my romanian ak 47. The front handguard covers the gas tube. The handguard has to be removed to get to it. The cleaning rod won't fit in. I going to fit that. The stock look good on it. The butt stock doesn't fit all the way up on the receiver, but it is close. "I got this product from a gun show dealer in Nashville on 11-3-07 for my Norinco MAK-90 Sporter. The following is not a strike against CTD or the dealer I bought it from, but rather Advanced Technology Inc. The seams from the molds have not been cleaned up at all on all the parts. They are very rough and I actually got cut on the seams. This requires either alot of sanding or some quality time with a dremel tool and sanding drum. Either way will mar the finish but doesn't ruin the product in any way, other than looks. On the upper hand guard, I had to shave off a small piece from the end where ATI failed to remove the stub from the parts tree. Also, following the directions to install this part will result in a failed install. For some reason the gas tube didn't want to seat right and prevented the locking lever from locking down, so I had to install the gas tube by itself, then install the upper guard. This is the only possible way to install it since the locking lever is completely covered after installation. Installing the stock was a serious pain as the instructions said to use a 13/64\" drill bit for the MAK90. I fought with this size hole for over an hour, working the original tang screw in and out several times. I even used a hex head bolt and a ratchet to work the hole lose and that still didn't help. I finally went to the next size drill bit, which is 7/32\". This worked much better, but still required being worked several times with a hex head bolt and oil. I finally got the original tang screw all the way in without butchering the screw slot too badly. Whoever decided to use a common slotted screw for the tang is a complete moron. In one of the comments below, someone said you have to find a different screw for the tang on the MAK90. Well, no you don't. Read your directions again and you will see that it clearly says to use the original screw. "This item was purchased for a friend's Century Arms AK 47. This weapon sported a steel, folding stock that was uncomfortable to shoot with. Because of the base plates of the folding stock (which had to be returned on the receiver to prevent having a large hole on both sides at the rear), modifications were necessary. This is NOT a \"drop-in\" part for AKs with a folding stock. Now for the worst part! The forearm grips were a full 3/4 of an inch short and could not be placed on the weapon! The old wooden forearms had to be returned to the AK and I suppose we will have to paint them black to prevent the weapon from looking like a mismatched piece of junk. As far as customer service goes, well. we were informed that because it was necessary to modify the buttstock, no returns or replacements would be made available. Basically, we were told that we were s. o.l. Please see our review on the weaver-pic mount receiver cover that we ordered with this part so that a simple red-dot could be added to this weapon. (It doesn't fit either and customer service doesn't care! We are now forced to go to a gunsmith and have the part cut or ground down significantly)."

"Mine is on a Romanian, does what its supose to. Sanding and Fitting – Both the wood tang that fits into the receiver and the bottom/rear of the buttstock may need to be sanded in order to fit into the receiver and mount the metal buttplate. The best method is to sand a little bit at a time, so as not to remove too much material. The handguards of your furniture may need to be sanded down a bit to fit your receiver, but should then slide snugly into the receiver.

Michael R: The one I was wondering about wasn't originally made as a mak 90. It was made as a semi auto Type 56 with the assault weapon furniture and wound up stuck at customs in 1989 when the import ban went into effect. They chopped off the bayonet mount, ground off the threads, put on a thumbhole stock, dremmeled off "type 56" and scratched in "mak 90 sporter". lol It was the very first kind of mak 90 im guessing.

Keith R: Depends on the mak 90. If it has the holes for a underfolder(covered and capped) with a tang welded on. Then you basically have 3 options. Buy an underfolder and install it like it was designed, or use one those thumb hole stocks, or buy one those dragnov stocks(where the pistol grip and stock are one, just like that thumbhole BS). If its a straight cut like one in this video, then you have alot more options. Or even a slant cut, but with hole in back. The underfolder version is closed off.

Instructions For AK Stock Replacement Courtesy of UltiMAK Enhanced Performance

These instructions show an AK with a stamped (sheet metal) receiver. The Milled receivers have some minor differences in the buttstock and grip attachment, but the basic concepts are the same.

Also included are the "The Rules" -- four simple rules that will prevent virtually all firearm accidents.

Always start by unloading the rifle-- Remove magazine and clear the chamber, then keep ammunition away from the work area.

Field strip the rifle: Remove dust cover, carrier spring and bolt carrier assembly. Find a screwdriver that fits the buttstock screw slots perfectly (this is important) and remove the buttstock screws. Stamped receivers will have two of them (figure 1).

The quick and dirty method for removing the buttstock: Insert a flat bladed screwdriver into the large hole in the top of the rear trunion, and pry the buttstock backward out of the receiver (figure 2).

The rear socket formed by the back of the receiver is sometimes burred at the edges, which can make it more difficult to insert the new buttstock. Run your finger along the inside edges to feel for burrs (figure 3).

(Optional) You can use a bastard file to remove the burrs (figure 4).

Understand that AKs tend to be a bit variable in specs. Your aftermarket stock tenon is typically going to be made on the large side so as to fit most any AK. It may be necessary to file some material from the buttstock tenon to get it to fit. Insert the buttstock. This may require substantial pressure. Striking the buttstock into a carpeted floor or heavy bench top works great for us, but avoid damage to the buttplate-- don't hit it into a hard surface, such as concrete, without some padding in between. Caution: If you're installing a folding or telescoping stock, using this technique may cause damage to the buttstock's mechanism.

Once the buttstock is seated all the way into the receiver you can drill the pilot holes for the screws (figure 5). For most original AK tang screws a 9/64" drill is about right. Be sure to start the holes in the exact center of the tang hole. A transfer punch works well for this. Drill to a depth at least equal to the screw's length (usually about 0.9 to 1")

Again using a screwdriver that perfectly fits the screw, support the rifle securely and turn the screws in all the way-- hard against the countersinks in the tang. The forward screw on a stamped receiver AK must be seated all the way down into the countersink to clear the carrier spring support. This takes a lot of torque, so a big screwdriver handle, a driver that fits the screw, and a good secure hold on the rifle are all critical. Cuidate. If you find that you cannot get the screw(s) in all the way, you may need to drill a larger and/or deeper hole.

UltiMAK sells a number of fixed, telescoping, and folding buttstocks, complete stock sets, and individual components here. so you can put together your own custom configurations.

With the rifle field stripped, unscrew the pistol grip bolt and remove the grip. Be sure the grip nut is in the receiver so that it slants backward at the bottom (figure 6). Place the grip bolt into the new grip. Holding the grip nut in the receiver with your finger, insert the grip bolt and get the threads started (figure 7).

Tighten the bolt good and tight, then hold the grip and try to twist it back and forth, to get it seated into the trigger guard, then tighten the bolt some more. After a day at the range, you may need to tighten it again, since the grip may have seated further against the trigger guard.

With the rifle field stripped, rotate the gas tube retaining pin lever upward until the gas tube can be lifted at the back and removed from the rifle (figure 8).

You can now access the forend retaining lever at the right-hand inside edge of the forend cap. Use a flat bladed screwdriver to pry the retaining lever up and around 180 degrees, so that it points toward the muzzle (figure 9). If your rifle has a stowed cleaning rod, make sure it is removed at this time. Now the forend cap can slide forward. You may need to tap it forward using a mallet or the plastic butt of a screwdriver (figure 10). Now you can work the forend forward, out of the front of the receiver and off the rifle (figure 11).

Installation is the reverse. The new forend may need to be squeezed inward at the sides, and upward against the barrel in front, to get it inside the forend cap (figure 12). This ensures a tight fit.

Some AKs have a lot more space in the front of the receiver than others. Being designed to fit most AKs, the aftermarket forend tenon may need to be trimmed to fit. A common #2 mill/bastard file is fine for minor adjustments, but a razor saw (sometimes called a hobbyist's saw) or even the saw in a Leatherman tool, may be needed for taking off larger amounts of material. Do not trim too much-- go for a good tight fit.

Be sure to rotate the forend cap retaining lever into its locked position before installing the gas tube.

If you're installing a new forend in conjunction with the UltiMAK AK optic mount. follow the directions for the mount. In some cases it may be necessary to first install the UltiMAK optic mount with the forend off and the forend cap unlocked-- tighten the optic mount screws most of the way to pull the mounting clamps up into the mount and out of the way. You can now install the forend and slide the forend cap into place. Then remove the mount screws and remove the mount. You can now rotate the forend retaining lever into its locked position. Your optic mount clamps are now held in place by the forend (or forend heat shield if applicable). Reinstall the optic mount and fully tighten the screws. With the rifle field stripped, rotate the gas tube retaining lever upward until the gas tube can be pulled upward at the back, and off the rifle (figure 8). (If installing an UltiMAK AK forward optic mount. you need go no further with this section because the mount replaces the entire gas tube/upper handguard assembly. Refer to the instructions for optic mount installation)

Using a wrench or a bench vise, gently lock across the flat side portions in back of the gas tube. Grab the handguard firmly and rotate it around the gas tube axis until it is exactly upside-down (figure 13).

This may take considerable force. Now the handguard can be pushed straight down and off the gas tube (figure 14).

There is a metal pressure clip in most wooden upper handguards. This is not needed for the new synthetic handguard. Reassembly is the reverse. Notice that there is a definite front and back to the handguard-- It is larger in back and tapers toward the front. The handguard must be pushed up into the gas tube with some force before it will rotate into place (figure 15). Before you reinstall the gas tube, be sure the forend retaining cap is locked in position.

Now enjoy your work. Clean the bore and bolt, take up some ammo and do some shooting. Recuerda; The AK's inherent accuracy is generally underestimated. Nearly all rifles shoot more accurately than their owners.

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

2. Always keep your finger off the trigger (we like to say "out of the trigger guard") until you're ready to shoot.

3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

4. Know your target and what is beyond it .

The first three rules are standard NRA rules and will serve you well. We add the fourth, which comes from Cooper, as a way to help you think about your shooting situations in the field.

You can spot an inexperienced and/or undisciplined shooter a block away, because among other things, you'll see the trigger finger go right onto the trigger as soon as the rifle is in the hands (see rule 2 above).

Thumbhole stock replacement?

there may be some BATFE compliance issues you may have to concider. before you swap that out.

Most definatly there is. On post band aks they were not part of the Brady bill but are part the 89 importation bill. In order to put on a bayo lug or change out the thumbhole stock (I am trying to remeber how it goes.) There are somthing like 15 parts to an Ak like reciever, barrel, stock, trigger, pistol grip etc. Out of the 15 parts I do believe 7 need to be U. S. parts. Which is pretty dumb and AK is an AK no matter who makes the parts.

if your talking about a post ban chinese version, some of the receivers were cut on a slant to discourage replacement, some were not cut

Yes, I had one and if you but up a normal stock it would not sit flush to the reciever. I sent mine to Krebs and he added metal to the slant to square it up. Cant even tell now.

This is a MAK-90 Type 56 rifle, a semi-automatic only Chinese variant of the Russian designed and produced AK-47 and AKM assault rifles. These are still produced by Norinco, primarily for export. The MAK-90 (Modified AK, 1990), was a redesign of the standard AK, which featured a stamped receiver, walnut finish thumbhole stock, chrome lined barrel, and a black oxide finish. Condition of this rifle is fair, around 50%.

norinco mak90. don't know the date on it.

85 to 90 percent of it orginal. the blueing is fine 95 percent of the place except near at the bottom end of the front sight. prevous owner(s) must lean it on things a lot.

shoot great, rifling are there and in 90 percent at least.

1 chep on top of the stock at the screw. must be done by an idiot trying to take it open and unscrewed the bottom part first and the thing just swung out and chip a small part there.

1 small chip in the top forearm.

gun is in very very good condition to me. shoot gun, strong feel. shake it like u hate it and u hear nothing as long as u keep your hand off the front guard cuz that's how it is.

barrel is clean enough to eat off. thanks to me.

HOW DO KEEP IT LEGAL when adding stuffs:

1) bayonet 2) a differnt set of furniture so i can save the wooden furniture as a future collectible items. i saw some dragnovus or something like that. look great and cost only 69 bucks. legal.

i don't want pistol grip. i want stock like thumbhole or similiear stuffs. i feel much more comfortable with it.

who make 75 round drum for cheap? i got brand new 30 round mags for 11 and 12 bucks. brand new and woork like charm. spring is tight when load all 30 rounds, making it hard to cock for first round though if i baby pull it.

can i get longer barrel.

Your MAK90 if its in original configuration should be legal, unless you have changed parts of it OR you live in a State where it is Prohibited . Other than that, if you are neither of these, then your MAK90 is fine.

If you wish to change your wooden thumbhole stock, for a different thumbhole stock, then you should be able to do it without much worry. Both are in a configuration that does not directly apply to the limits of "Evil Features" a detachable magazine rifle can have.

A thumbhole stock on the MAK90 means it has no Flash Supressor, Bayonet Lug, Pistol Grip, or Grenade Launcher. As long as the rifle never has these things and has the Thumbhole stock it is good to go. No hay problemas.

If you add any other of the features I have mentioned, it is a whole different game.

The 1994 "Assualt Weapons" ban as it is commonly known will change these laws if it sunsets. This means you could possibly add a pistol grip, bayonet lug, etc legally. But this has not happened.

There are thumbhole replacement stock sets for the MAK-90. I would start at TAPCO to get a price on what you are looking for, then check on Ebay to see if anyone is selling them used. The Zytel stocksets are extremely tough (and heavy I will add) so if You could get one a half price I would jump on it.

is it legal to have only a U. S. made pistol grip and no rear stock at all. as in just having a pistol and hold it like that. that would make a terrific home defense.

On A MAK-90 in its original imported condition, modifications which are essentially. the same features, without adding new ones are ok. It remains in a condition grandfathered by the 1994 AW ban.

Modifying a MAK-90 other than this would make it subject to the installation of USA made parts as per 922 ®. Bayonet lug, it is not longer configured as the MAK-90 so it is treated differently. What is odd it the "Transition Rifles" which are the semiauto military styled rifles imported after the Bush 89 ban and the 1994 AW legislation exist in a gray area of BATF definition.

Theoretically you could add USA made compliant parts and a bayonet. This this keep you out of jail if a BATF agent looks at it? Maybe not, Maybe so. Hopefully after you spent money for a lawyer you can prive to the judge that you were right to do what you did, and be found not guily. This is the flip side of these legal questions. Yes it may be Legal in how your interpret it, but if you have a problem with what you did, you best be careful. I suggest erring to caution. Legal fees are not cheap.

There is concrete information in changing a MAK-90 to a pistol grip configuration, and I would only do a modification that I could have a supporting document on. Specifically a letter from the BATF saying it is acceptable. That way if you ever do have a run in, you ass is covered. I will see if I can dig my info up on this and post it.

All parts kit guns are subject to 922 ®. To be made they have to have a specific number of US made parts no matter what. Thumbhole or No Thumbhole.

If the 1994 "AW" ban sunsets this law will still be there. This is the ONLY reason these rifles are available from foriegn lands to get around the Bush ban of 89. If it is a parts kit firearm, there must be a BATF required number of USA made parts in addition to other features specified by the individual firearm.

The only way to put a folding, collapsable, or telescoping stock on any rifle is to place it and have it permamently pinned or welded in the open position. Basically you can put the folder on in a fashion where the folding actually does not work.

Should the 1994 "AW" ban sunset, you will be able to install one on your post ban AK, because the definition of a "Semi-automatic Assualt Weapon" with the "Evil Features" we discussed are no longer prohibited.

I plan to switch my SAR1's to side folders immediately if the Ban sunsets. The problem is I don't think it will.

I believe that new legislation will replace it. If we do no get off our asses, the replacement legislation I think will not be the same as we have now, but far far worse. Have you read the Proposed bills in the House And Senate that are totally new? The 1994 legislation is a cake walk compared to it. Imagine if no more detachable mag semi-autos could be sold. Período. Not even legally between private people.

Check out the Gun owners of America website and look at the proposed bills. All they have to do is like what Diane Fienstien did in 1994 with the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. She slid some extra legislation in, and got the laws passed (What we know as the 1994 AW ban) by mixing it with good sound legislation.

It may also explain why I take the rights issues so seriously. I want to be able to teach my kids to shoot and pass my Firearms on to their Grandchildren.

I think that the ban will either go away, or be replaced by something worse. I have read about the proposed bills, and they look alot like Australia. I sincerly hope that neither get passed. It would be better to live with the '94 ban than what they're proposing.

A surprising number of people don't understand that AK's are not really any different than any other rifle. I know how this is going to sound, but alot of women consider the so called assault weapons to be evil because they're "scary looking." I'm still trying to get certain relatives to understand that an SKS is no different than a 30-30. If those people were to shoot an AK, or SKS, or FAL, or what ever, they would realise that these guns have no special powers and are not evil. They're actually a whole lot of fun.

Did you know that part of the '94 ban says that if someone murders someone with a so called assault weapon, that it is an automatic 15 years in addition to the murder sentence! Most muderers don't even serve 15 year sentences! - Captain Eddie

Actually they are not legal to be imported into the United States. If you see any for sale recently which are not "PreBan", they are manufactured of foriegn and American Parts. This makes it an "American Firearm" which is not a weapon labeled by the Bush 89 ban.

This is why you are able to by these "Clone" firearms. When people were argueing with me on a different thread about not owning Assualt Weapons, they were sticking their nose up at the Single Reason Why they are able to still purchase military styled Semi-autos in this country. They are not AK-47, or FAL's. They are given separte distinctive names so they can be legal. If you want them to go away, keep calling your SAR-1 or MAK90 an AK-47. You are only helping those who wish to strip us of our rights.

i call my ak mak90 cuz people wouldn't know what i am refering to when i say ak47. mak90 has its distintive thumbhole stock, which is now avaible on many hunty rifles.

i hate it when gun stores call guns "assault rifles". i don't like the name ar15 because it mean assault rifle 15 or somehting like that. but it is hard to call my gun an ak because it doesn't have the full-auto. u know.

so i'll now call my gun a par ak47. par is paper assault rifle. my ak47 assault a lot of paper lately. i hope it is legal to do so. >)

Obviously a pre-94 Norinco which in itself is awesome. I'm also in a ban state, which makes it more awesome. I got it for a very low price for a ban state price. And a below average price for general gunbroker prices too.

It's mint or near. The chamber looks as nice as the day it was made, I can't describe how clean it is.

Here's the thing. I can't stand the thumbhole stock (Who can?) and if I change to a pistol grip I have to do all the 922R parts.

What does the hive think about my options? Should I just sell this off and get a regular unit like a compliant Arsenal with some preban mags? Should I 922R this and put the Tapco trigger group (Which would suck, because the trigger on this feels nicer than any AK trigger I've ever felt)? Or should I just live with the ugliness and be happy that I have one of the nicer examples of an AK?

If I truly thought that setting it up with a pistol grip, AMD65 side folder and bayo-lugged FSB was going to triple my money, I'd be all over it. Then again, I might just do all that and keep it.

Right now, it is ALL imported parts. No US made receiver, stocks, triggers, etc. It's allowed to be that way because 922r says essentially 'if it is not a sporting rifle' it has to have no more than 10 imported parts. Since they put that godugly thumbhole stock on it, that makes it 'sporterized' (Like the Saiga in stock form) and exempt from that. As soon as I put a pistol grip on it, I have to change 6 parts; Typically all three stock pieces and three trigger pieces (Trigger, hammer, disconnector). Which sucks, because this trigger is glorious.

I'd load it up with all the preban goodies that you can being that it is rare, go play around with it and see if u decide you like it better in your collection. If you do not then u have 2 options, sell it for quite a bit because it is a preban OR keep it nice and wait to see if it does become a collectable in its stock form, if that DOES happen, put the original stock back on it and sell it that way if you don't want to keep it. Just avoid modding the acual rifle at all to fit the preban parts, make sure if there is any filing or bending going on its happening to the modular parts not the rifle itself.

Don't quote me, but I believe for 922r, having a mag over 10rds (pre and post ban, doesn't matter), it needs to be compliant. Regular capacity mags like 30rds are considered "non-sporting." If someone here can, please prove I'm wrong because I may be. I'd like it though, if I had the money and you put it up for sale. Even trade for converted/compliant Saiga 7.62? lol

I was pretty sure of that too, that is why there are no compliance kits of AKs however there are tons for the SKS rifles. I couldn't say it for sure either though.

That is one thing to make sure of OP - you may not even have to 922r this thing, it might not be a requirement.

But ATF's web site says any firearm becomes C&R automatically at 50 YO. Anybody know why the AK would not be the same story ? Firearms automatically attain C&R status when they are 50 years old. Any firearm that is at least 50 years old, and in its original configuration, would qualify as a C&R firearm. It is not necessary for such firearms to be listed inATF’s C&R list. Therefore, ATF does not generally list firearms in the C&R publication by virtue of their age.

They probably do it's just that not many people have an AK from 1962.
